Weekend Recap: Ulibarri & Earhart, Roots & Sweat, League Opener
Well, week 1 is in the books and there’s much to tell. As much as I love Tarantino movies I think I’ll go ahead and start at the beginning…
Friday - Discraft Demo Days at Dellwood with Paul Ulibarri and Brian Earhart
I can tell you with confidence that I’m going to be saying this a lot- but Sean Callahan and the DDG crew are absolutely next level. They are exactly what the sport needs and we’re so lucky to have all that ambition and positive energy in our area. In standard Dellwood fashion, this event was SICK. Professional players Paul and Brian put on an hour-long clinic full of truly valuable tips (I can already tell my putting is improved). Not only are they great players and warm people, they’re great teachers.
The clinic was followed by a round of random triples playing the OG 18 hole layout. It was a race to finish our last few holes with the waning sunlight making even the shortest putts challenging. Shout out to my partner Jay Clark for doing the heavy lifting on our team and being a great partner. We managed to take down the win with a -14 earning both of us a brand new Grip bag and mini Buzz. After the round Paul and Brian hung out with everyone taking pictures and talking Disc Golf. Huge thanks to these guys for being all around great ambassadors of the sport.
Some of us will be participating in the next similar Dellwood event in June with world Champ Ricky Wysocki. If that’s not full yet, I strongly encourage you to check it out. God Bless Dellwood.
Saturday - Planting Trees
We had the privilege of working with the Student Conservation Association to help plant 100 new trees at 50 Acre Park. The course has always had drainage issues so this should help improve things over the coming years. I’m sure we’ll see new challenges arise as the trees fill things in. The SCA does this kind of work all throughout the Chicagoland area and we’ve asked them to stay in touch next time there’s an opportunity to lend a hand. It’s not terribly complex work but it’s also not easy. I mean, physically it’s a little challenging but more than that it’s hard to give up your free time on a beautiful day to do manual labor - especially when the true fruit of the labor won’t be felt for years to come. When that time does come, hopefully the park provides a more enjoyable experience for future players that could fall in love with the sport on this course.
Sunday - 2019 League Opening Day
14 players including 2 new members turned up to throw down with us at Katherine Legge Memorial park. Weather was damn near perfect and the course conditions were great considering all the rain we’ve had over the last few weeks. There was another club (Bird Brain Disc Golf) running their league at the same time as ours so the course was BUSY. There was almost a ‘tournament vibe’ going on which was great.
Here’s how the final scores and points shook down:
