Tournament Recap: 2023 Hine’s Emerald Dragonfly Open

Any event organizer knows there’s no such thing as a perfect event… but this was about as close as it gets.

Waves of gratitude are due to all the players, volunteers, and our partners in the Forest Preserves District of Cook County who work tirelessly to protect the precious green spaces and the wildlife within. This event could not have happened without all their support.

72 players across 7 divisions registered for 2 rounds of competition at the serene Rolling Knolls disc golf course in Elgin, IL. The freshly mowed grass provided pristine course conditions while the weather was pure blue skies and sunshine.

6 volunteers registered to help players spot their discs and keep the pace of play moving. They are truly the MVPs of the day.

The players meeting was hosted inside a beautiful pavilion where Forest Preserve staff members Tim Mondl and Will Ax gave players a quick lesson in course history and an overview of the work performed by the FPDCC. The pavilion was left open for players to enjoy during their lunch breaks.

While the day was packed with competitive action, including an Ace by Jay Gail on hole 7 (last hole of the day), the event was defined by a spirit of collaboration and a collective appreciation of nature.

Rolling Knolls is currently the only permanent disc golf course within the Forest Preserves of Cook County, though there are ongoing efforts to increase disc golf programming and make the sport more accessible throughout the county.

Thank you to all players, volunteers, and FPDCC staff for contributing to the mission of strengthening communities and improving lives with Disc Golf.
